Final Round Recap: 2022 Southwest Airlines HPU Shark Shootout at Pearl CC

Cal State San Marcos breaks through to win team and individual titles

OAHU, Hawai‘i – After back-to-back second-place tournament finishes this fall, the Cal State San Marcos Women’s Golf Team finally broke through to win the 2022 Southwest Airlines HPU Shark Shootout at Pearl Country Club. As the only team to shoot under-par in the final round, their impressive 20-stroke victory was guided by four players who all finished in the top-ten.

In the Team Competition, Point Loma (second), West Texas A&M (third), host school Hawai‘i Pacific (fourth) and Cal State Monterey Bay (fifth) rounded out the top-five. Prior to the HBU Shark Shootout, West Texas A&M had first, second and third-place finishes this fall.

Individual winner Breann Horn (Cal State San Marcos) remained steady during the morning rain

In the Individual Championship, Breann Horn overcame rainy weather on the front nine to finish at four-under for the day. Her two-day total of seven-under allowed her to enjoy a four-shot victory.

“Coming into the final round, I was determined to do everything that I could to help our team secure victory after coming so close earlier this season,” said redshirt junior Breann Horn of Cal State San Marcos.

However, her title was not without late-round drama. On the 18th tee, Horn blocked her drive into the right-side rough. Facing a difficult recovery shot between two trees, Horn managed to stay calm and get up-and-down for par.

“I was blessed to not be on a tree root, where I still had a chance to punch out,” Horn added. “I was insistent upon limiting the damage by taking a big number out of play.”

Alyssa Campbell’s (West Texas A&M) final round 71 led her to a runner-up finish

Rounding out the top five of the Individual Championship was Alyssa Campbell of West Texas A&M (second), Kellie Yamane of Hawai‘i Pacific (third) and Cal State San Marcos’ Madison Murr (fourth) and Diana Delgado (fifth). Like Horn, Murr tied today’s low score at four-under.
